ART ON THE SLOPES

The Arts Station and Fernie Alpine Resort have joined forces for the third annual Outdoor Art Exhibit. With an open theme, community members submitted over a dozen works as original and unique as our community. All pieces in this exhibition were created on skis or snowboards, reflecting the vibrant mountain culture of Fernie, British Columbia.

Installed along Cedar Trail, these pieces offer a dynamic art experience as you ride through the forest.

Inspired by Revelstoke’s outdoor art movement, R.O.A.M., this project celebrates the intersection of nature, sport, and artistic expression!

The Rooster

Nolan Drew

Nolan is a visual artist from Tsawwassen, BC. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics and Painting from Emily Carr University in 2013. He has lived and exhibited across Canada, from Halifax and Winnipeg to Calgary and Vancouver. Recently relocating from New Westminster, he now lives and works in Fernie and is excited to be part of this vibrant community.

Cherry Ski

Alex Danger

Alex was born in London. Originally focused on bright, colourful, and large-scale acrylic canvases, he has spent the past three years travelling through more than 45 countries, creating abstract works and photographing the remarkable places and people he encountered. He is currently based in Fernie for the winter season, where he is building a fresh collection of art to share.

Floral Flourish

Gemma Young

Gem is a tattoo artist originally from North Wales, UK, now working at Famiglia Tattoo Studio in Fernie. Known for neo-traditional floral tattoos, Gem also enjoys painting flowers on a larger scale. Inspired by Fernie’s creative community, their work blends a love of tattooing with a passion for snowboarding, culminating in this special installation at Fernie Alpine Resort.

Clouds & Desert

Thalea Krimberg

After years of traveling, Thalea paints from landscapes, colors, and cultures around the world. Her sketchbooks, filled on buses, beaches, and streets along the way, capture contrasts, encounters, and the feeling of movement. She collects impressions on paper before transforming them into larger works. Each piece is shaped by her experiences on the road and her background in fine arts in Belgium.

Bubblegum Night Watch

Alison Frank

Alison creates small, absurd creatures that feel fragile yet alive, expressing vulnerability and vital force. She works in painting, drawing, and etching, often presenting pieces in ornate frames. A professional mermaid, she photographs herself swimming underwater with submerged cameras. She holds a BFA from the University of Regina, an MFA in Printmaking from LSU, and works from her Calgary studio.

Nell & Bubba

Rachel Behan

Rachel Behan copied this striking artwork from Fernie artist Troy Cook, aka Bubba, created before his passing and later used on Nell Smith’s debut solo album. Nell, a 17-year-old Fernie musician, worked with The Flaming Lips and appeared on The Colbert Show. The Nell Smith Memorial Fund supports young musicians with grants, removing barriers and inspiring joyful, determined careers worldwide.

Down the Valley

Erich Stoffels

Erich, a multidisciplinary muralist in Elk Valley, uses aerosol, acrylic, woodworking, and resin to create vibrant, street-style art. Drawn to Fernie by the mountains, he thrives in its local arts community. Expanding digitally, he produces logos, merchandise, and clothing, and welcomes collaborations and commissions. His largest mural, All Aboard, adorns Fernie’s Legion.

Everyone Loves to Ski

Annica Collombin

Skiing is for everyone: young, old, able-bodied, adaptive, competitive, or for fun. I’ve been skiing for years and teaching at Fernie Winter Sport School for 10 years. Off the slopes, I enjoy snowshoeing, XC skiing, walking my dog, and creating wood art, available at the Fernie Arts Co-op.

The Witnessing Tree

Natalie Tretyak

Natalie, a feltmaker in Fernie, BC, originally from Siberia, has worked with felt since 2015. Using wool, fleece, silk, and natural fibers, she creates eco-friendly clothes, wall hangings, and interior art. Specializing in seamless wet felting, she shapes 3D pieces without sewing. Natalie also teaches workshops, sharing her skills and passion for felt as a versatile, sculptural medium.
