Fernie is a Mountain for Everyone

By Sophia Gould

A few weeks ago, we loaded up the truck in Cochrane, Alberta, and headed to Fernie with our 4, 14 & 17-year-old kids. After the four-hour drive, we arrived at Lizard Creek Lodge and immediately knew we had made a good choice for our crew.

Our suite had the most incredible view of the resort!

With two bedrooms, a loft with two queen beds and a full kitchen, it gave our family space to spread out and made it much easier to keep up with the never-ending task of feeding growing humans. Even the hard-to-impress teenagers were impressed!

We cooked a few meals in the suite, but we also decided to splurge on dinner at Cirque Restaurant. The Cirque burger was a standout with both Dad and the hungry 17-year-old, Malcom, which is saying something.

The next morning, our family naturally split into different adventures. While the kids wanted a little extra sleep, Tommy and I took the opportunity to get in first chair laps on our own. Once Malcom was ready to ride, we headed to Fernie’s Rental Shop, where Luke helped get him geared up to tackle “Superberm” and “Top Gun” laps.

Meanwhile, 14-year-old Mylee and our 4-year-old son, Sylas, weren't quite ready for the bike park. They headed out for their own morning adventure around the base, stopping for treats and cold drinks at Slopeside Café and hitting up the little play area.

Later, Mylee enjoyed some downtime by the pool, Tommy and Malcome biked, while I got some one-on-one time with my little guy. Of course, we had to check out the Elk Grove Forest Playground and Nature Bob's Interpretive Centre located at the top of Elk Chair.

When we came back together, we swapped stories from the day. We laughed about Malcom’s bike park bails, Mylee told us how much she enjoyed some well-earned R&R poolside, and Sylas was already asking when he could go back to the mountain playground again. It was the perfect end to a day that looked completely different for each of us.

And that may be exactly what we love most about Fernie Alpine Resort. The best mountain getaways don't require everyone to do the same thing. You can find your own adventure, make your own memories, then come back together and share them.
