EVENT FAQS

Registration opens on January 8th at 6pm (MST - Mountain Standard Time)

The event is open to ages 8-18 years old.
Event age is determined by the competitors age as of December 31st, 2025

Athletes competing in the Junior Series for winter 2025-26 will compete in the age category that relates to their age as of December 31st, 2025. Athletes cannot advance a division, even if their birthday is mid-season.

U12 Category: For athletes age 8-11 as of December 31, 2025
U15 Category: For athletes age 12-14 as of December 31,2025
U19 Category: For athletes age 15-18* as of December 31, 2025
*Please Note for athletes 18 years of age:

  • Athletes 18 years of age may remain in the IFSA Junior series or move forward and compete in Adult and/or Collegiate Series events. They are not permitted to compete in both series.
  • When an athlete 18 years of age competes in an Adult Event, they are no longer eligible to compete in the Junior Series.
  • When an athlete turns 19 years of age, they are no longer permitted to compete in the IFSA Junior Series and are automatically considered an IFSA Adult Athlete.
  • Athletes who compete in the U19 Junior division are automatically awarded seeding points to the Global Seeding List to support their transition to Adult Qualifier competitions.  These points will only be visible when the athlete turns 18.
  • It is up to the athlete to determine if they wish to compete as an IFSA junior or adult according to the guidelines above.
  • Athletes transitioning from the IFSA Junior Series to the IFSA Adult Series within the same membership year will only be required to purchase a Junior Membership.

For more details on age categories or transitioning to adult events please refer the IFSA Handbook HERE

Registration is filled 50% through athlete seeding and 50% through timestamp registration.

Before you register.  Ensure that you have purchased your IFSA and Regional memberships (for Fernie's event this is a Western Canada membership). The registration platform won’t allow anyone to register unless they have both IFSA and their regional memberships.  For more information on memberships please refer to this step by step Membership Guide.

Regardless of when a 2* event registration opens, the process will follow the same steps.

  • Step 1: Registration will open on Liveheats (Fernie's event will open on January 8th at 6pm MST). All athletes who register are automatically placed on a WAITLIST.
  • Step 2: After 72 hours, registration closes, and no further athletes will be able to sign up for the competition.
  • Step 3: Once the 72-hour registration window closes, the top-seeded athletes will be moved off the waitlist and confirmed until 50% of each division in the event is full (50% seeding).
  • Step 4: The remaining 50% of event starts will be confirmed by time-stamp. Athletes who registered the earliest (regardless if they are seeded or not) will be moved off the waitlist until all divisions in the competition are full (50% open registration).

Credit Cards are charged at the time of athlete confirmation, along with non-refundable LiveHeats and IFSA fees. Cancellation before Step 2, the 72 hour registration window closing, is possible without penalty or charge.

Four Regions have elected to restrict 2* registration to athletes within their Region, so to guarantee enough starts for their local junior athlete community.  Western Canada (our region) is one of them. Once these Regions have completed the above registration process, they have the choice to reopen registration for 2* events to out of region athletes, should these events not be full.

If you are uncertain if your athlete’s seed is high enough to guarantee entry to an event through the “50% seeded invitation,” then register as early as you can during the registration window to provide your athlete the best opportunity to be invited through timestamp.

Some 2* events are incredibly popular, with over 250 athletes trying to sign up for 100 spots. Other 2* events have fewer athletes trying to register. If your athlete has no or low seeding, then signing up for a variety of 2* events could result in them getting more starts over the course of a season, and gaining more seeding points for future years of competing.

If an athlete does not make it off the waitlist, they will remain on the waitlist and contacted if a space becomes available.

DNS riders will not receive a refund for the registration fee.

  • Helmets are MANDATORY when inspecting, competing, or riding within the venue. Coaches, volunteers, and event staff (Judges, Technical Director’s, Ninjas, Patrol) must also wear a helmet when accessing the venue.
  • It is MANDATORY that an athlete wears a back protector during any competition run(s). The back protector must be a stand-alone piece of equipment designed to protect users from impact during a fall. Backpacks, avalanche packs, etc. that are worn externally will not be considered valid back protectors
  • The IFSA strongly recommends additional protective gear when training or competing in Freeride such as but not limited to: hip pads and a mouth guard.

Event participants can be registered as both independent athletes and athletes traveling with a club or team. In all cases, athletes must be coached on safety protocols and sound decision making by an IFSA certified coach in order to register for sanctioned events. It is highly recommended that all junior athletes be accompanied by an accredited IFSA coach while attending sanctioned competitions.

Coaches seeking venue access are required to have a current IFSA Coach Certification and a current IFSA Coach Membership.
